1995年，只有17岁的Maria在朋友和家人的一再鼓励下，参加了一个全国性的选美比赛并获得“马萨诸塞美少女”称号。还在大学四年级的时候，她便被一频道新闻台录取，成为当时小有名气的学生记者。2001年，年轻的Maria作为记者曾奔赴中美国家萨尔瓦多现场报道地震灾难，并专访美国总统布什先生。
